Arkham Horror
Looking for a board game like Arkham Horror?

I’m looking for a board game that resembles the coop play of Arkham Horror. I know there are a lot of games where it’s 3 against one or so on and that’s really not what I’m looking for. I want the board game to have it’s on AI of sorts or allows for things to happen while the players try to work together to beat the game. I’ve heard of Defenders of the Realm and LOTR which are similar, but they didn’t have the thematic or the feel I was looking for. Does anyone know of any other games like Arkham?

There’s Betrayal at House On The Hill. It kind of has this element in it, but it’s still a competetive game too. At first players work together to explore a haunted house. The house is built randomly every game, so the lay out is never the same. As you explore you’re encountering spooky events and finding items that will help you later on in the game. Eventually you trigger a Haunt. The Haunt is probably going to be different every time you play because there are 50 different Scenarios you can play. Every Haunt Scenario has a different person become The Betrayer, sometimes it’s the person who triggered the Haunt, sometimes it’s the person with the highest or lowest Sanity score, sometimes there’s no obvious Betrayer and it’s more that there are evil spirits that just trying to kill you. When the Betrayer is revealed they suddenly are no longer working with the group but are playing AGAINST the group.

The theme is very strong in this usually, some of the Scenarios work better than the others. If you do get it though get the Second Edition, the First Edition is good, but it wasn’t quite ready when they published it and it’s full of weird printing errors that they had to fix with a 40 page Errata that basically re-wrote all the Haunt Scenarios.

The game Last Night On Earth is a great game, but that is a 1 Vs Others game. But it’s great and the theme really works well with it.

Flying Frog Games also made “A Touch Of Evil”, a game about a town being haunted by an evil Monster of some sort(Werewolf, Vampire, Headless Horseman). It’s a Co-Op game and has a good atmosphere to it. The theme fits pretty well with this game and I had a good time playing it.

Other than those I haven’t really played any co-op Horror type games. The co-op games I have played tend to be 1 Vs Others type games like Scotland Yard or Fury Of Dracula. Fury of Dracula is a lot of fun, but it can be really brutal to players because of how strong Drac is.

Pandemic is a really good Co-op game too, but the theme isn’t the strongest part of that game, and it heavily influenced Defenders of the Realm so you might already be familiar with it.

Well I hope this has been helpful. I’m sorry if it’s super rambly, I’m very tired.

Beneath the Moors and Darker Places

Beneath the Moors and Darker Places

$18

In addition to his stellar Necroscope series, Brian Lumley is highly regarded for his short fiction, for which he has won the British Fantasy Award. Beneath the Moors and Darker Places, a companion to The Whisperer and Other Voices, collects nine of Lumley’s best long short works, many of them unavailable for decades in any form. The Cthulhu Mythos of the immortal H. P. Lovecraft provides inspiration for much of Lumley’s work, including Dagon’s Bell and Big C, both included here. The explosive creation of a new volcanic island off Iceland in 1967 led to Rising with Surtsey, an homage not just to Lovecraft but to the great August Derleth. David’s Worm -which takes an interesting view of you are what you eat -was published in a Year’s Best Horror Stories and later adapted for radio in Europe. The collection also includes the macabre The Second Wish, published here for the first time with the author’s original, intended ending, and The Fairground Horror, first published in The Disciples of Cthulhu twenty-five years ago and not seen since save for a small press edition. The title tale, Beneath the Moors, a complete short novel, has been unavailable in the US since its first publication by Arkham House in the early 1970s. It is considered to be one of Lumley’s strongest short works; Tor is proud to restore this and the other pieces in this volume to Lumley’s growing readership.
